Trucking Auto Liability Insurance

Every truck operating on the roads is required to carry an auto liability policy. This insurance protects the driver or trucking company in the event of an accident. This is a mandatory policy that all trucks must have to operate in any state.

Auto liability insurance is divided into two parts:

Personal Injury Protection or Bodily Injury Coverage
Property Liability Coverage

Bodily Injury Coverage

Bodily injury coverage or personal injury protection is an insurance product that covers the injuries and losses for the injured parties in the other vehicle. These policies cover medical expenses, lost wages, and ongoing medical care for the injury victims up to the terms of the policy.

Property Liability Coverage

Property liability coverage will cover the expenses for damages to the property of the other vehicle involved in the accident. These expenses may include damages to their vehicle or personal property carried within the vehicle.

This part of your auto liability policy will also provide coverage if you are sued for the accident.

Coverage Amounts

The Federal Transportation Safety Administration (FTSA) requires that all trucks, either independently owned or as part of a fleet, carry a minimum policy of:

$1 million for Personal Injury Protection
$5 million for Property Liability

All drivers must submit a form 91x to the FTSA showing that they have this minimum coverage before driving their trucks on any road.

Trucking Auto Liability Insurance Does Not Cover The Truck Driver Or Your Equipment

All truck drivers, owner-operators and trucking companies must understand that the trucking auto liability policy do not cover the semi-truck driver or the cargo. Any injuries or losses they may have will be covered under a different insurance policy. This policy will also not cover any damages to the truck. Independent drivers that contract through a company may be required to have additional coverage for the truck driver and the truck. Several policies are available to truck drivers, owner-operators and trucking companies to provide the coverage you need for the driver and the equipment. It will always be in your best interest to speak with your insurance rep to find out what policies are available so you can confidently operate your business.
